To Have The Spirit of Prophecy is to have THE testimony of Jesus.

Building off of my previous post, about THE testimony of Jesus, leads perfectly into my next topic, The Spirit of Prophecy. If you haven’t read the previous post, I would suggest stopping here, going back and familiarize yourself with the content of that post.

This is another one of those points where people say or read the words incorrectly in the scriptures, and subsequently teach it incorrectly. The testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy[1], not [a] testimony of Jesus, but His testimony.

Devils have a knowledge of God, they know who Jesus is- yet He claims them not. Likewise, many people will do many mighty works in His name, and yet He will not claim them. These set themselves up as a light unto the world, saying “follow me” or “follow him” I know the way[2], when it is written that Christ is the only light in the world, that He is the way.[3] He will deny these, and say unto them that He never knew them. These are they who have NOT received THE testimony of Jesus. Those who have, He knows and claims them, they are the Lords. He declares to the Father that they are His, joint heirs of Salvation and Glory with Him. These others who profess His name, and profess to do His works, but receive not THE testimony of Jesus are not His, they are pretenders and He will not claim them. He will say unto them: “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”[4]

God will not acknowledge that which He has not called, ordained, and chosen. In the beginning God called Adam by His own voice. “And the Lord called unto Adam and said unto him, where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, and hid myself.” (See Genesis 3:9-10.) Adam received commandments and instructions from God: this was the order from the beginning.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith (TPJS), pg. 168)

Nephi reveals in verse 9 of 2 Nephi 32 “that ye must not perform any thing unto the Lord save in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ, that he will consecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may be for the welfare of thy soul.”

“Alma went and began to declare the word of God unto the church which was established in the valley of Gideon, according to the revelation of the truth of the word which had been spoken by his fathers, and according to the spirit of prophecy which was in him, according to the testimony of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who should come to redeem his people from their sins, and the [H]oly [O]rder by which he was called. And thus it is written. Amen.” (Alma 6:8)

It is through receiving THE testimony of Jesus Christ that you may be called into His ministry, it is by His own voice calling unto you, according to His own will, and this is the Holy Order by which all His servants are called, have been and will ever be called. This is the pattern and order by which he, Alma, was called – and likewise the Holy Order by which you may also qualify to be called. Hence the importance in seeking Christ to receive THE testimony of Jesus[5] which is the Spirit of Prophecy while in the flesh[6]; and this is the pattern set even from the days of Adam, until now.

Joseph Smith Translation (JST) of the Bible, Genesis 14: Pay particular attention to Verses 27-29.

25 And Melchizedek lifted up his voice and blessed Abram.

26 Now Melchizedek was a man of faith, who wrought righteousness; and when a child he feared God, and stopped the mouths of lions, and quenched the violence of fire.

27 And thus, having been approved of God, he was ordained an high priest after the order of the covenant which God made with Enoch,

28 It being after the order of the Son of God; which order came, not by man, nor the will of man; neither by father nor mother; neither by beginning of days nor end of years; but of God;

29 And it was delivered unto men by the calling of his own voice, according to his own will, unto as many as believed on his name.

And…

“Thus we behold the keys of this Priesthood consisted in obtaining the voice of Jehovah that He talked with him [Noah] in a familiar and friendly manner, that He continued to him the keys, the covenants, the power and the glory, with which He blessed Adam”. (TPJS, pg. 171)

Thus we see that “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy”.[7] It is more than [a] testimony of Jesus isn’t it, for even the Devils confess He is the Son of God, and yet are not redeemed. Thus the testimony of Jesus is His testimony of you- He has claimed you as His, and bears witness unto the Father and His Angels that you are an heir of salvation with Him, that you are clean from the blood of this wicked generation.[8] This is the Holy Order, by which He calls all His servants; by His own voice, this is the pattern, “which order came, not by man, nor the will of man; neither by father nor mother; neither by beginning of days nor end of years; but of God”.[9]

Enter in by the way, and the Holy Ghost will show you all things that you must do, and Christ shall manifest Himself to you in the flesh,[10] you will not be forsaken and those who seek Him early, shall find Him, and know that He is.[11] This is His promise to all.[12]

Edited, to add the following (4/14/2015):

Thus having the spirit of prophecy in you, which spirit you speak and testify by, those hearts that are contrite, able and willing to receive the Lord are edified, softening of the hard hearts, but to those who refuse to soften their hearts when they hear by this same spirit and harden their heart against it, it beareth witness against them – even unto their confounding, and condemnation.

Which spirit comes to those who “first seek to obtain my word (voice of God calling unto you), and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit (of Prophecy) and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men.” (D&C 11:21)

Thus having the Spirit of Prophecy, you shall speak with the tongue of angels, wherefore they speak THE WORDS of Christ by the power of the Holy Ghost. (2 Nephi 32:2-3). Feast upon the words of Christ, for they shall tell you all things what you should do. (2 Nephi 32:3).

This is the spirit of prophecy, to speak the words of Christ as they are given to you by Him, through the power and medium of the Holy Ghost, and whatsoever you speak when moved upon by the power of the Holy Ghost, shall be the mind of the Lord, will of the Lord, and voice of the Lord. (D&C 68:3-4). And this promise is also “unto all the faithful elders of my church—“. (D&C 68:7).

The Spirit of Prophecy is then (not limited to the following):

·         the power of God unto the convincing of men

·         speak with the tongue of angels – Alma was spoken to by an angel in his wickedness, what happened?

·         speaking THE WORDS of Christ by the power of the Holy Ghost
