Take upon you the name of Christ; there is no other name by which you may be saved.
Take upon you the name of Christ, and speak the truth in soberness, and as many as repent, and are baptized in my name, which is Jesus Christ, and endure to the end, the same shall be saved. Behold Jesus Christ is the name which is given of the Father, and there is none other name given whereby man can be saved: Wherefore all men must take upon them the name which is given of the Father, for in that name shall they be called at the last day: Wherefore if they know not the name by which they are called, they cannot have place in the kingdom of my Father. (1833 Book of Commandments 15:23-26, emphasis mine)
The name by which you are called by at the last day, which is your new name, is His name, Christ, you have taken it upon yourselves His name through entering into the covenant of baptism, which He promises those that He will baptize you with fire and of the Holy Ghost. The baptism of water is not complete until it is ratified by heaven, hence the need also to seek and obtain a baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost. Then truly you are in a covenant with Him, whereby your name becomes Christ. This name is the name by which you will be called by at the last day.
And now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters. And under this head ye are made free, and there is no other head whereby ye can be made free. There is no other name given whereby salvation cometh; therefore, I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ, all you that have entered into the covenant with God that ye should be obedient unto the end of your lives. And it shall come to pass that whosoever doeth this shall be found at the right hand of God, for he shall know the name by which he is called; for he shall be called by the name of Christ. (Book of Mormon, Mosiah 5:7-8, emphasis added)
Christ means anointed, or anointed one, thereby receiving of the waters of baptism, and also the baptism of Fire and of the Holy Ghost, we literally become His, we become anointed by His Holy Spirit. This promise is extended to all who approach Him with a broken heart and contrite spirit that He will baptize them with Fire and of the Holy Ghost. In an earlier post I elaborated on what it is to have a broken heart and contrite spirit, but will not elaborate further here. It is possible to be baptized by water, and have not yet received the baptism of Fire and of the Holy Ghost, as well as it is possible to have received the baptism of Fire and of the Holy Ghost and know it not.
And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost, even as the Lamanites, because of their faith in me at the time of their conversion, were baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and they knew it not. (B of M, 3 Nephi 9:20)
God chooses the sacrifice we will make unto Him in righteousness, it will be a sacrifice that will consist of a broken heart and a contrite spirit. It will be a sacrifice that He will accept of you, because He has appointed it unto you, that you should make it unto Him. Refer to the previous blog post “A covenant by sacrifice.”
Behold, mine house is a house of order, saith the Lord God, and not a house of confusion. Will I accept of an offering, saith the Lord, that is not made in my name? Or will I receive at your hands that which I have not appointed? (Doctrine and Covenants 132:8-10)
Christ becomes your Father; you become His Sons and His Daughters, because He “hath spiritually begotten you”. (B of M, Mosiah 5:7). Naturally at birth, you receive your parents name, you are theirs, you take upon your selves your fathers name. Likewise, when you born again of the water and also of the spirit, you are His, you become Christ’s, you take His name upon yourself, this then becomes your name and is the name by which He will call His children forth at the last day and by His name you shall be known by and shall be Sons and Daughters to a king, and joint heirs with Christ.
Today is a special day for me, 40 years ago I was born, I am 40 years old! I have, especially of late looked back over these past 40 years to all that which I can recall. I have lived many different lives in this short span of time if you will. I have nearly been killed several times to have my life spared by His hand, maybe 10 times but likely more, at least the ones I know of that I was spared. It started at an early age, these attempts on my life by unforeseen hands at work, my mother was driving, I was a newborn and my father in the passenger seat and it was winter, they were driving up a mountain road which was narrow, down came a semi truck which caused my mother to drive off the cliff, we landed safely in the snow bank at the bottom of the cliff, and the car still running. I apparently slept through the whole ordeal. When I was 3, I was playing peekaboo (so I am told) with my next-door neighbors car, which happened to be our bishop in Kearns Utah in 1978, he backed up over me out of his driveway. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance, to have nothing but minor scratches and dings.
I left the gospel and the church for a time (13 years +/-); I took liberties because of what I knew at that time. I knew then at 22 the only person I should follow is Jesus Christ, I swore to Him I would never follow a man or men again, not knowing what I was saying or its significance at that time. I had learned very quickly at a young age, that I indeed could not rely upon the arm of flesh. The Lord had spoken to me in my heart and mind, He was teaching me, though at this point Christ wasn’t here, I was young and foolish, I said in my heart when Christ comes I will follow Him no problem but for now, I am doing my own thing. Instead of hearkening to the spirit and what Christ was teaching me, I turned away from the truth and pursued a life that lead me down diverse paths and ways until I became so lost that my way and or purposes had become totally lost to me. Satan took a hold upon my heart, the Lord gently reminded me from time to time, He reached out to me, and He again spared my life several times during this period.
Jumping way ahead, I received a final call and warning to return to Him. Three months before my return back to God and facing Him. I distinctly heard the words, voice, thoughts, impressions placed upon my heart and soul, that struck me with such force that I could not utter words or speak for a moment, but was left to contemplate His warnings and words to me. He said: “If you do not repent, and turn to me, I will remove my hand of protection over you and deliver you over to the buffetings of Satan”. The Lord was preparing me for His final offering and call to return to Him. The stage had been set long before my son was born, long before his mother and I knew each other. But the time had come, a final call if you will. Three months later, driving on the road in my truck, taking my son who was 3 ½ at the time to daycare, he says to me: “Dad, I want to talk to God”. I said ok, and asked him if he knew how. He replied: “No”. I told him I would show him, I told him we talk to God by prayer. I said we fold our arms and showed him, my son folded his arms, I then said we bow our head, and close our eyes. Now I didn’t close my eyes, I was driving, and then I began the prayer. My son immediately repeated the prayer, word for word. I have no idea what he thought of it, he was satisfied that he had talked to God and didn’t speak of it again until later that evening. I thought it was cute, proud of my son, curious how he came to this desire. At this time in my life I had been warned, told, that if I did not repent and turn to Him I would be destroyed in so many words, the feeling of that which I herd Him speak left that impression upon me, that I would be destroyed in the flesh.
That evening, at bedtime, ready to put my son into his bed. He says to me: “Daddy we need to say our prayers first.” Who could deny their child such a humble request? I took my place on the floor and kneeled directly across from him and held his tiny hands in mine. I began the prayer, he again repeated after me word for word. This time when we prayed together, the spirit entered my heart and soul with such force that I felt nearly overcome by it, then the words entered my heart and mind and said: “Once you have finished putting your son to bed, return to your room and offer up a prayer unto me”. Do you notice who is speaking, whom do we pray to? I obeyed and returned to my room and began to call upon God, a flood of light, truth and knowledge was returned to me – I knew what I needed to do and that was to repent and return to Him. It’s been a crash course for the last 6 years.
God does speak, He does know us, no opportunity is lost to Him to teach us, to call to us, and to remind us of Him. He is personable, He does love us, He sustains you with your daily breath and when you undertake to commit sin, or to break the laws of God, you are misusing His power that He has given to you, your daily breath to commit sin. We are powerless without Him; he sustains our bodies and spirits by His word. He is with you daily – all things are because of Him.
Return to Him, cry unto the Lord and repent, receive Him and receive His name, your new name and become His. I have seen the Father; I have been in His presence, I know of His love and mercy and that He sustains all of creation, He alone holds it up by His power, His glory, light, truth and love. He is worthy of our worship, and our fidelity. If you could be in His presence now, you would know that and would not say to follow another man or any men, you would know without a doubt that His Son is to whom we should follow, to whom we should look, no other name given, an eye single to His glory.
I would dare not offend God and persuade you to follow me, or any other man if even that man is called by His own voice to be His spokesperson, we should hear, receive His words from His servants, however we are to turn to the Lord, know the Lord and obtain His word for ourselves. Servants call you to repent and turn to Christ, not to follow themselves or others. They don’t set themselves up or others as a light unto the world.
Jesus the Christ lives, He is the Messiah and the Son of God. I have seen Him and spoken to Him. He is the way, the truth and the life, there is no other name given under Heaven to whom we should follow, or obtain salvation from, even the best of mortals fall short of His glory, all are fallen and not even capable of saving even themselves. He is the way. Receive Him and take upon you His name, and at the last day you will be called forth by His name, which His name “is given of the Father”. (B of C 15:23-26)
Receive Him and live!
